Refined vs Whole Carbs: The Choice Might Impact Your Weight, Study Reveals

Considering a change in diet to sidestep those extra pounds that sneak in with age? New research suggests that it’s less about how many carbs and more about which ones you’re eating.

Diving deep into data that spans over two decades and encompasses nearly 137,000 folks, a study discovered that people who favored whole grains, fruits, and non-starchy vegetables (hello, spinach, carrots, and broccoli!) were less prone to weight gain. On the flip side, those indulging in refined grains, sugary drinks, and starchy vegetables might see the scales tipping.

Recently featured in the BMJ, this study makes it clear: it’s the carb quality that truly counts. Walter Willett, the senior researcher from Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, even pointed out an interesting twist – while sugar isn’t great for our waistline, starchy foods like white bread and certain veggies might be bigger foes.

And there’s more to it than just weight. Previous studies have linked high-quality carbs with fewer risks of heart ailments and specific cancers.

So, what’s the common trait of the most weight-gain inducing foods? A high glycemic index. They quickly elevate blood sugar levels, which can send your body into fat-storage overdrive. Plus, many of these foods skimp on fiber.

Wondering which foods could be your weight control allies?
